The Emerald Beauty of the Soča River

🌊 Total Length: 138 km 💎 Water Clarity: World Class Emerald 🐟 Sanctuary: Marble Trout (Salmo marmoratus)

The Hydro-Geological Wonder of Trenta

The Soča (known in Italian as Isonzo) is celebrated across the globe for its ethereal turquoise-aquamarine color, maintaining pristine optical clarity throughout its upper course in the Trenta Valley.

The river emerges from a profound subterranean karst spring in the Trenta basin at an altitude of 876 meters. As it carves its way through narrow limestone gorges and boulders of polished white marble, dissolved minerals and algae interact with pure sunlight to produce its signature emerald glow.

Velika Korita (Great Gorge)

A 750-meter long canyon dropping 15 vertical meters into deep turquoise pools framed by ancient limestone flutes.

Marble Trout Habitat

Protected endemic trout with distinctive marbled olive-green patterns swimming through crystal alpine torrents.

The Great Soča Gorge (Velika Korita Soče)

Located near the village of Soča, the Great Soča Gorge is a 750-meter-long canyon only a few meters wide in places, with sheer walls dropping up to 15 meters into swirling emerald pools. Walking along the wooden hanging bridges reveals ancient fluvial erosion patterns carved over millions of years.

Ecological Sanctuary for the Indigenous Marble Trout

The Soča River is the primary global habitat for the rare Marble Trout (Salmo marmoratus), recognizable by its unique green-and-white marbled pattern. Rigorous conservation laws and fly-fishing restrictions protect this magnificent endemic predator, which can reach lengths of over a meter.

The Soča Trail (Soška Pot)

A 25-kilometer hiking trail stretches from the river's subterranean source near the Izvir Soče hut down to Bovec. The trail traverses picturesque hanging footbridges, historic WWI relics, and alpine botanical gardens (Juliana Alpine Botanical Garden).
