The Jewel of the Julian Alps
Formed thousands of years ago at the retreat of the Bohinj Glacier, Lake Bled (Blejsko jezero) is recognized across the world for its iconic island, medieval cliffside castle, and turquoise waters enriched by natural thermal springs.
Unlike many high-alpine lakes, thermal springs feed Lake Bled along its northeastern rim, warming the water to a comfortable 25°C during the peak summer months. This geological anomaly created an early oasis for wellness retreats pioneered by Swiss hydropathist Arnold Rikli in the mid-19th century.
Pletna Boat Passage
Hand-built wooden vessels propelled by standing oarsmen who preserve a hereditary guild tradition dating back to Empress Maria Theresa.
Bled Castle Cliff
Sits 130 meters above the lake atop a vertical dolomite crag, safeguarding thousand-year-old medieval defensive architecture.
The Sacred Island & The Pletna Tradition
Bled Island (Blejski otok) sits peacefully in the western quadrant of the lake. Accessible by traditional flat-bottomed wooden boats called Pletnas, propelled solely by the skilled rhythmic rowing of local oarsmen (Pletnarji).
Upon landing, visitors ascend the famous 99 South Stone Steps to reach the Gothic Church of the Assumption of Mary. Tradition dictates that ringing the church's wishing bell three times grants the visitor's deepest wish.
Bled Castle (Blejski Grad)
Perched atop a 130-meter precipitous limestone precipice overlooking the shimmering water, Bled Castle is Slovenia's oldest recorded castle, first documented in a 1004 deed of gift by Emperor Henry II. The castle museum preserves historic arms, ironworks, and a traditional Gutenberg-style print shop.
Essential Hiking Trails: Mala Osojnica & Ojstrica
For the quintessential aerial panorama of the lake with the Karawanks and Mt. Stol in the backdrop, hike the steep forested trail up to Ojstrica (611 m) or continue upwards to Mala Osojnica (685 m). The sunrise over the mist-veiled lake from these viewpoints is among the most photographed vistas in Central Europe.
